Updated analyses highlight NY hospitals’ continued and growing impact on their communities

(Rensselaer, NY) – The Healthcare Association of New York State’s updated economic and community benefit reports once again illustrate New York’s hospitals and health systems’ continued – and growing – impact on their local economies and communities. Hospitals and health systems continue to serve as powerful, irreplaceable economic engines and top employers in local communities across the state.

Economic and Community Benefits

The latest analysis finds that New York’s statewide hospitals and health systems generate about $228 billion in economic activity annually (10.3% of the state’s gross domestic product, or GDP). Often the largest employers in their communities and spurring additional job growth in their surrounding communities, the report finds hospitals and health systems generate 937,000 jobs statewide. The report further explores tax dollars generated ($39 billion) and payroll expenditures ($61.6 billion).

“Our hospitals are the lifeblood of communities across the state,” said Bea Grause, RN, JD, president of Healthcare Association New York State. “They provide high-quality, compassionate care 24/7 to all and proactively reach out beyond their walls to foster health and wellness. This report is also a good reminder that New York’s hospitals are economic anchors in their communities, contributing billions of dollars to the economy and generating hundreds of thousands of jobs.”

Adhering to their charitable mission, New York hospitals contributed $18.1 billion (20% of total expenses) in community benefits and investments, including community health initiatives and their coverage and subsidization of care for low-income, elderly and under-served New Yorkers. This figure does not include the billions more in community benefit provided by New York’s 21 public hospitals, which are exempt from this IRS reporting.

HANYS’ Member Spotlight series covers many of the community health programs, workforce development and other programs invested in by New York’s hospitals and health systems. Snippets are highlighted in the video above; videos and articles on each of these initiatives can be found on our Member Spotlight website.

Patients Cared for by New York’s Hospital

The latest analyses document the millions of patients treated in outpatient, emergency room and inpatient settings, as well as how many babies were delivered in these hospitals.

In New York, Medicare- and Medicaid-covered patients make up 72% of all people admitted to hospitals and 63% of all outpatients provided care, yet only 53% of New York hospitals’ patient service revenue comes from these public insurance payers. In 2025, HANYS will continue to advocate for government reimbursement that covers the cost of care, as most New York’s hospitals and health systems lack the funding necessary to reinvest in the patient care.

Interested individuals can access HANYS’ statewide report and reports broken out by  regioncongressional districtState Senate district and Assembly district. Hospital-specific and health system-specific reports are also available.

December 2024 analyses leverage resources including 2023 New York state hospital cost reports, 2022 RIMS II multipliers and hospitals’ 2022 IRS form 990s; more data source information is available online. These reports are refreshed on an annual basis.
